It marks the Super Eagles’ record biggest-ever triumph and Sao Tome and Principe’s second-worst loss after their 11-0 pounding at the hands of Congo on July 7, 1976.

Victor Osimhen headed home the opener after only nine minutes, scored the first goal of the second half, then added two more in the 65th and 84th minutes to finish his most impressive performance in a Super Eagles jersey.

Africa’s most expensive striker currently has an amazing 15 goals and eight assists in just 22 outings for the three-time Africa champions.

The 23-year-old is also the quickest player to achieve 15 goals for the senior national team.


When he hammered home his third goal just after the hour mark, Osimhen became the first Super Eagles player to achieve a hat-trick since Odion Ighalo in 2018 and Nnamdi Oduamadi in 2013. Osimhen is the seventh overall Nigerian international to collect a hat-trick.

And when he recorded his fourth of the day, the former Lille boy became just the third player to score four goals for the Nigerian national team, following the footsteps of Elkanah Onyeali against Dahomey in 1959 and Rashidi Yekini vs Burkina Faso in 1991.



At 0.68, Osimhen currently holds the best goal-to-game ratio in Nigerian football history, greater than that of the country’s greatest ever striker Rashidi Yekini (0.63). (0.63).

Sitting above the famous Austin Okocha and Julius Aghahowa and just behind Odion Ighalo and Ahmed Musa (16 goals each), Osimhen is now the eighth all-time leading scorer of the Super Eagles.

After scoring the winner against Sierra Leone on Friday, the Napoli striker is presently the leading scorer for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with five goals.
